How much does camp cost?

We are charging $900 per camper for Camp More 2025, which is only a portion of the actual cost to operate the camp for each child to attend.

Do you offer financial assistance?

Absolutely! We have never turned away a camper due to financial constraints. We work hard year round on fundraising to be able to make camp accessible to all who kids and teens who need it. The financial assistance application is embedded within the registration form. Award amount is dependent on application.

Do you take volunteers?

Currently, we are partnered with Speech Language Pathology graduate school programs at Portland State University and Pacific University for our camp counselor positions. We do take a limited number of day volunteers but those slots are typically reserved for our local, adult stuttering community members.

Will my child stutter less when they come home from camp?

Instead of focusing on fluency, we emphasize the pillars of community, communication, and confidence while at camp. We empower our campers to do and say more, rather than focus on stuttering less. We teach our youth that it’s okay to stutter. Camp More naturally encourages campers to talk more openly about their feelings and experiences with stuttering. As a result, some campers may find themselves speaking more freely than ever before, which could mean more stuttering—but that’s okay because they are saying what they want to say! For the majority, their stuttering remains the same, and some learn to lessen their avoidances and fears around stuttering which may create a sense of ease. While each camper’s experience is unique, it is a meaningful one for all, and our hope, is they all return home speaking with more confident communication..

My child has multiple diagnoses, would this be a good fit for them?

Camp More is designed specifically to support children who stutter, with a focus on building confidence and providing a positive stuttering experience. Set on the beautiful Oregon Coast, our camp involves a lot walking (10-20 miles/day!) covering diverse terrain. To ensure all campers get the most out of the experience, we require participants be able to be independent with mobility, daily hygiene routines and able to manage busy schedules with many different personalities, and frequent transitions from sunup to sundown. While we are dedicated to being inclusive, we do recommend discussing any specific needs or concerns with us to ensure this is the right fit for your child. Let’s chat more!

What if my child gets homesick? Can they call me?

First, know that you're not alone in feeling this way—this concern comes up every year, and it’s something every parent experiences. We'll cover this in more detail during the parent meeting, but in short, drop-off is usually the hardest part. There may be some tears, but once you’re out of sight and the first night is behind them, they’ll be so engaged and busy that, 99% of the time, homesickness won't even have a chance to set in. If absolutely necessary, we will contact home, but we try to avoid this as much as possible, since hearing your voice can often intensify those feelings. Rest assured, they will settle in and have a rewarding experience that they'll remember for a lifetime!

Can siblings, friends, or family members attend with my child?

At this time, we are unable to accommodate siblings or other family members. We understand the desire to have them be a part of the experience, but Camp More is specifically designed for children who stutter to provide a focused, supportive environment tailored to their unique needs. We’ve found that participants thrive and find their most confident voices when they are fully immersed in a community of others who share similar experiences, allowing them to stretch and grow together.

My child has dietary restrictions. Can you accommodate?

The amazing chefs at Camp Magruder are able to accommodate common dietary restrictions and allergies such as gluten free, dairy free, vegetarian/vegan, peanut free, and no pork. However, we are unable to provide alternatives for all of our significantly picky/selective eaters. A sample/draft menu will be sent home in the Coming to Camp Packet prior to a Mandatory Parent/Family Meeting where it will be discussed further, but families may be asked to provide supplemental food options for their significantly picky eaters.

How do campers get to and from camp?

For Camp 2025, it is the responsibility of families to ensure their campers arrive and depart on time at the designated drop-off and pick-up times. Unfortunately, Camp More is not able to provide transportation for campers at this time

Camp More is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit in Portland, Oregon. Tax deductions may be taken for contributions to the full extent allowed  by law.
